QRP Pedestrian Mobile Anyone?

We call our monthly outings “Back to the Woods Mini-DXpeditions” and participation is not limited to “5W CW”, but lower power (~ 20W max) using battery operated equipment and any mode or band. Opening up the group beyond the classic “CW 5W“ has created greater participation, and the larger groups have attracted more interest from the passers-by in the park.   These outings have also been an opportunity to discuss technical issues or have just casual conversations.

We have breakfast around 0730 at the Cracker Barrel in Sanford (200 Hickman Dr., Sanford – the NE corner of I-4 and SR 46 just north from the Seminole Town Center Mall) and then it is a short drive to Sylvan Lake Park which is about 5 miles west of I-4 and south off of SR 46. This park has been an excellent place:  good facilities, available picnic areas and breeze from the lake and shade from the trees helping to keep the temperatures reasonably cool.
If you choose to join us in the park about 0930 local go to Picnic Area A which is past the soccer fields, take a left and follow signs to  Pavilion 2 and look for our antennas and ham tags on the cars. We’ll be around that area.

If this Group gains greater participation, other locations about Orlando could be added to the schedule or perhaps similar outings coordinated by other ARC groups.

NOTE:  Don’t forget, the October 2012 Mini-DXpedition has been rescheduled to the third Saturday on October 20th as the second Saturday of October is the Melbourne Hamfest.

This station will be in NY on Oct 20, but I will do my best to be there in November.

What sort of antenna is that? Is the flag pole a counterpoise?

LOL! Yes sort of a mashup of things…It is a Buddistick vertical mounted on a external frame backpack with a 4 ft extension for some more height and rather than typical pedestrian mobile drag wire I used a bicycle flag at a 90 degree angle to the Buddistick and wrapped a 16 ft. counterpoise wire around it. Performance was excellent on 20m where I worked Macedonia on first call with a MFJ 9420 SSB rig at 10w PEP. More shots are available on my personal blog. Here’s a link to that. Another view is here. Thanks for stopping by and checking out our site!
