High Level Rig

Walt…Can You Hear Me Now?

Cooler and hopefully drier weather is on the way! Fall in Central Florida provides a great outdoor experience for portable QRP operations. Dust off the gear that’s been sitting around waiting for better weather and come out for some fun and ham radio with us. Here’s a couple of our gang in action last month at Sylvan Lake Park.

Our outing starts with breakfast and windy conversations about our hobby and solutions to world problems. Join us a Cracker Barrel in Sanford, FL Saturday 10/28/2017 at 0730 EDT. When we’re done bloviating, we’re normally out at our preferred location in Picnic Area A, Pavilion 2 near the lake in Sylvan Lake Park. If we get a big turnout or that spot is reserved, we spread out into other picnic areas so watch for our cars and antennas to find us.

We normally have a variety of gear, and if you don’t bring your radio but have a license and want to join the fun, we normally are pretty good at sharing a turn at the key. We welcome all modes and only ask that if you want to run QRO you spread out a bit to avoid damaging someone’s rig. We love homebrew and FrankenRadios that show up and we even have Walter’s latest creations on display from time to time. Watchin Walter

The park is a good place for younger members of your family to get outdoors. There are restrooms and playgrounds close by too.

Hope you’ll join us!

Now that Hurricane Irma has passed we will return to see how our antenna hanging trees fared at Sylvan Lake Park in Sanford, FL on Saturday 23 September 2017. Fun and breakfast starts at the Sanford Cracker Barrel at 0730 EDT. This is a time to solve world problems once and for all as well as catch up on the latest homebrew projects and hear how to dry out wet gear  after RACES operations.

By 0900 we should be setting up gear at Pavilion 2, Picnic Area A at Sylvan Lake Park.

Hoping for a good turnout and to see some new gear and antenna setups.

FOBB and Skeeter Hunt are over now! Car problems and wx kept me tied up and I didn’t get to play radio for the FOBB this year. Rain and lightning make contesting in the great outdoors of Central FL very interesting! I managed about 70 minutes in the Skeeter Hunt but only got 5 QSO’s with poor band condx and Murphy working on my antenna connector. So how did you do?

You get your chance to brag at our breakfast gathering at Cracker Barrel in Sanford, FL at 0730 on Saturday 26 August 2017. New gear, toys or trophies are fair game for braggin’ rights. Bring ’em on!

Around 0900 we should be setting up portable gear in Sylvan Lake Park on SR 46 about 5 miles west of I-4. We’ll be in picnic area A in one of the 2 pavilions unless it has been reserved. So watch for our antenna laden vehicles and amateur radio license tags in the other 2 picnic areas if we’re not in our usual spot.

Come on out and play radio in the park!
